What the research found
- Published fixed fees for a C&I battery feasibility study: none, after searches in German, Dutch, English and Romanian. Consultancies quote individually.
- German freelancers in the energy supply category: €110 an hour on average, across 207 profiles (freelancermap).
- German interim energy engineers: €480–920 a day on one platform's city pages, which include the platform's markup (fratch).
- Context for what businesses pay for subsidised energy advice in Germany: BAFA's programme for non-residential buildings has paid 50% of the fee since 7 August 2024, capped at €850, €2,500 or €4,000 by floor area (oekozentrum.nrw).
- UK, Dutch and Romanian study fees: unavailable.
An estimate of the effort
Zorowatt's market research estimates 2–5 engineer-days for a simple study — one site, 12 months of 15-minute data, peak shaving and solar, an NPV — and rounds the day rate to €500–900: 2 × €500 = €1,000 at the low end, 5 × €900 = €4,500 at the high end. It is an estimate for orientation, not market data; your own time sheet is the better source.
What drives the days
- Getting and cleaning the data: one of the three pains users raise most often, with trusting the results and modelling the tariff. Asking early saves days.
- The tariff: reading the right version, and rebuilding the bill until it matches the invoices.
- The number of scenarios: sizes, the 2028 Dutch draft, the German 2029 reform, solar, a grant.
- The report and the meeting: a finance reader will ask about every assumption.
What the client is deciding
The study supports an investment far larger than its fee. Illustrative: a 300 kWh battery at €450 per kWh installed is €135,000; a €2,500 study is 2,500 ÷ 135,000 ≈ 1.9% of it. One UK source puts 100 kWh of commercial storage at £20,000–40,000 installed (Heatable).
Ways to price it
- A fixed fee per site, with the data and the scope defined in advance.
- Tiers by data: a quick screen from invoices; a full study on 12 months of 15-minute data; extra scenarios priced separately.
- A day rate, with an estimate of days.
- A first-step price for the data check and bill reconciliation alone, which can stand as a deliverable: an invoice error found is a result the client can act on.
What an offer should say
- What the client provides, with a deadline: the data checklist in What to ask your client for before a battery study.
- What you deliver: the data check, the rebuilt bill against the invoices, the sizes tested, the expected case and upper bound, the sensitivities, the report.
- What it is not: not a guarantee, not a bankable report, not an installer's design or protection study, not investment advice.
- How many revisions and meetings are included.
- The tariff versions and the date they will be checked.
Your tools are part of the cost
For comparison, HOMER Grid lists $4,200 a year on its annual plan (HOMER Grid pricing). Zorowatt's own plans are on the pricing page; whichever tool you use, divide its yearly cost by the studies you expect to run.
Frequently asked questions
- Is there a market price for a battery feasibility study?
- Not a published one. The research found only hourly and day rates, so any figure for a whole study is an estimate built from the days it takes.
- Fixed fee or day rate?
- A fixed fee is easier for the client to approve; it works when the data and scope are defined first. A day rate fits when the data is unknown. Another option is to price the data check first, then fix the rest.
- Can I charge for the bill check alone?
- Yes. A rebuilt bill reconciled with the invoices is useful in its own right, and an invoice error it finds is a finding the client can act on before any battery is discussed.
- Does a tool make the study cheaper?
- It can cut the days spent on data, tariffs and dispatch. Whether you pass that on in the price or keep the margin is a business decision; the scope and the honesty of the result should not change.
